The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at MES’s Abasaheb Garware College was established in the academic year 2007–08 with the aim of providing quality media education that combines theory with practical learning. Over the years, the department has grown into a space where students are encouraged to learn, explore and understand the changing world of media and communication.
The department offers two programmes:
B.Voc in Journalism and Mass Communication
M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication
The M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication is a two-year full-time postgraduate programme affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University. Students from any academic stream are eligible for admission. The B.Voc programme focuses on skill-based and industry-oriented learning, helping students gain practical experience in different areas of media and communication.
The department believes that journalism education should go beyond classroom teaching. Students are given opportunities to work on assignments, presentations, projects, field visits and media activities that help them develop communication skills, confidence and professional understanding.
The department is equipped with smart classrooms, computer lab facilities and audio-video studio setup including cameras, microphones, lighting equipment and editing software. Students also get the opportunity to interact with journalists, media professionals and academicians through guest lectures, workshops and industry sessions.
Apart from academics, the department regularly organizes national study tours, regional field visits, publication work and its annual fest Samvaad, giving students practical exposure and teamwork experience.
The department has consistently guided students towards internships and career opportunities in reporting and anchoring, podcasting, photography, digital media, public relations, advertising, filmmaking, social media management and multimedia production. Many students have been placed in media organisations, production houses, communication agencies and related fields over the years.
