DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
The Department of Zoology is an academic department that focuses on the scientific study of animals, from their structure and behaviour to their evolution and interactions with the environment. The department was
established in 1945. The department runs the undergraduate course in Zoology (Senior College), and also it is involved with teaching at the XI and XII Standard (Junior College). The Zoology Department is located on the second floor of the main educational building. The department is a vital part of many universities and research institutions, offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in zoology.
Mission and Objectives: The primary mission of the Department of Zoology is to advance our understanding of the animal kingdom through research, teaching, and outreach. The department's objectives include:
- Providing students with a comprehensive education in zoology, encompassing the principles of biology, ecology, evolution, and conservation.
- Conducting cutting-edge research in zoology, addressing local, national, and global challenges related to animal health, conservation, and sustainability.
- Fostering collaborations with other academic departments, research institutions, and industries to promote interdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer.
- Promoting public awareness and appreciation of the importance of zoology in addressing global challenges and improving human well-being.
The Department of Zoology has research focus areas that include:- Fishery Science
- Animal Physiology
- Ecology and Conservation Biology
- Evolutionary Biology and Genetics
- Wildlife Biology and Management
- Animal Behaviour and Welfare.
Best Practices: Versatility in teaching-learning strategies is always adopted with free hands with the aim of shaping up valued personalities. Active learning strategies such as tutorial classes, group discussions, book reviews, e-assignments, presentations and seminars are emphasized. Learning in the field is accomplished through regular educational excursions especially for the skill enhancement courses in zoology like apiculture, sericulture and aquaculture which gives an insight to students regarding various career options through zoology. Scientific talks with eminent scientists are organized for reinforcement of students. The department has Zoology Association under which various activities related to students’ academic growth are undertaken.
Future Goals:- Running certificate courses for Undergraduate and general public interested in Zoology.
- Master degree in Zoology.

The students actively participate in organization of the workshops, seminars, exhibitions, Film shows etc. The photographs taken by the students are displayed in the exhibition.
Field visits: Zoology is the subject to be learnt in the field. The Field visits are organised to explain various ecosystems such as forest, aquatic and grasslands. The national Parks, Sanctuaries and Sea Shores are explored to have the first-hand experience. The students get hands on knowledge about the fauna in various ecosystems. Our Faculty as well as resource persons in the field explain various ecosystems as well as different animal types.
Corporate Connections:Faculty of the department who are doing research work have their own collaborations with other research institutions such asAgharkar Research Institute (ARI), PuneNational Chemical Laboratory, PuneIISER, PuneNational Centre for Cell Sciences (NCCS), PuneDepartment of Zoology, SPPUZoological Survey of India (ZSI), WRS, Pune
