The Department of Biotechnology started functioning in the academic year 2005-06 and soon became a very progressive and frontrunner department amongst the affiliated colleges to Savitribai Phule Pune University. The mission of the Biotechnology program at MES Abasaheb Garware College is to provide its students with an education that establishes a strong foundation. The department works to create mutually beneficial partnerships between industry and education and develop the technical and critical thinking skills necessary for success in the field.
The Department offers both B.Sc and M.Sc courses in Biotechnology. It has strongly established its position in the student community for its high quality teaching and state-of-the-art facilities. Out of 12 highly qualified staff members 6 have doctoral degree and two have completed their M.Phil. Degree. The faculty is involved in diverse research areas such as Enzymology, Nano-biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Bioremediation, Secondary metabolites and Fermentation technology, resulting in national and international publications.
The Department has been encouraging the students to think independently as well as implement research ideas. The alumni have been guiding the present students with respect to the placements, studies as well as summer trainings. The faculty also guides the students for their participation in a number of co-curricular as well as extra-curricular activities. One such activity undertaken by the Department is segregation of waste and sending plastic, paper and glass waste to the recyclers. This has ensured completion of loop from source to recycler.
