Department Of Political Science

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Department of Politics started functioning at the under graduate general level since 1954 and at the special level since 1966. The department has been conducting the M.A Politics course since July 2002 and has been steadily and successfully achieving its objective. The Department was awarded the Best Department Award by the college in the year 2005-2006. The department hopes to continue with the same record.

FACULTY
The Department currently has a faculty strength of 4 teachers. Dr. Aparna Agashe is the head of the department and Dr. Shobha Karekar ,Dr. Rimli Basu and Shri Kisan Kumre are the other faculty members.  All the teachers are involved in research and have diverse areas of specialization. The faculty profile of the department is as  follows:

  • Organization of a National Conference and Workshops for Students
  • Publications in Peer Reviewed Journals
  • Completed several Refresher/Orientation Courses/FIPs’
  • Active Participation in Extension Activities (Curricular/Co Curricular and Extra Curricular)
The department has a departmental space, equipped with ICT facilities.  

STUDENT STRENGTH
 The strength of the students at the U.G. and P.G. level of the department has always been good and is steadily on the rise year after year. The students come from all parts of India especially from the North East at the P.G. level. The Department has a lot of students from outside the state especially the North East. The approximate ratio of such students is 50% from states like Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and so on. The department also has several international students from Afganistan, Iraq and Iran. Admission to the above mentioned courses are according to the rules prescribed by the University for the purpose. The criteria applied for admission is merit along with the quota for open and reserved categories.

RESULT
Result has consistently been good. Good number of distinctions and first classes.

LEARNING RESOURCES
The Department uses a good number of learning resources. Latest books (reference as well as text books are made available to the students in the Library). There is a  separate section in the Library for P.G. students. Several journals of international repute are also available. E sources are also available.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The department strives to use modern tools of teaching and make the learning experience of the students more wholesome. The department uses the following techniques:
  •  Use of Models.
  • Live models like mock parliament, mock corporation are used.
  • Extensive use of charts and maps especially for subjects like international politics, foreign policy, Comparative Politics and Government, Local Self Government
 

FUTURE PLANS
The future Plans of the Department include plans to develop an M.Phil research Centre and to carry out a joint venture with institutions like YASHADA where students would be provided training of administrative techniques

HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT AND VICE-PRINCIPAL FOR ARTS
 (DR. APARNA AGASHE )
 A Gold medalist from the Department of Politics and Public Administration, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and a doctorate from the same department with specialization in International Relations, Dr. Aparna is serving the Department as a Senior faculty for the past 15 years teaching both the Under graduate and the Post graduate students. She was awarded fellowship by SIDA, to spend a semester in the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, Uppsala , Sweden. She has written several research articles in peer reviewed journals of India and abroad. She has been a guest speaker and resource person for several other departments. Currently she is simultaneously holding the Administrative post of the “Vice-Principal”(for Arts Faculty).

SENIOR FACUTY AND CO-ORDINATOR FOR MASTERS COURSE
( DR. SHOBHA KAREKAR)
A doctorate from Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Masters from Department of Politics and Public Administration, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and a topper at Bachelors degree level, Dr. Shobha is the “Co-ordinator” for the “Masters course” of the Department. She has completed 3 major research projects, and has been awarded as the All India Best Teacher, for the year 2018-19. She is the member of Board of Studies of several Universities and is also an External Examiner and a recognized Phd Guide. Currently she teaches at the Post-graduate and under-graduate division and also is the Coordinator for the Competitive Examination Unit.

FACULTY
 (SHRI. KISAN KUMARE ) 
A Masters from the Department of Political Science , MES’s Abasaheb Garware College, affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University and a bachelors from Amravati University, Shri. Kisan joined the department one and half years ago. He has served as full time faculty in SSPM’s Vasantrao Naik Arts, Commerce and Science College, Shahada, Dist- Nandurbar, Maharashtra, India. He has completed several refreshers course and attended several workshop and conferences as resource persons. Shri. Kumare teaches at the Undergraduate Division of the Department.

FACULTY
   (DR. RIMLI BASU)
A doctorate from Department of Politics and Public Administration, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and an Alumni of Jadavpur University, Calcutta for her Bachelors, Masters and M.Phil with a Specialization of International Relations(South East Asia), Dr. Rimli is a faculty on temporary/contract basis. She has served as a Research Associate in the Department of Politics and Public Administration, Savitribai Phule Pune University, written several research articles in (peer reviewed journals), chapters in books and books also. Dr. Rimli teaches at the Undergraduate and Post-graduate level of the Department.

STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS
Several students from Masters division has successfully completed NET/SET. Several students of the Masters’ and Bachelors’ level won Elocution Competition, Essay Competition, etc.
The department organises curricular,co curricular and extra curricular activities. The Department realizes its social responsibility and also the need for inculcating in the students an awareness about social issues. Keeping this in mind the Department also organizes several activities for the benefit of their students. Most importantly, the department has been active in organizing several programmes for the students and for the improvement of the teachers. The Department has established a POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION where in the teachers and students jointly conduct and organize activities

Group Discussions
 
  • Every year the department organises group discussions between the students. This is to inculcate in them an awareness about social and political issues. Till date many issues of current relevance were addressed by the students like Women’s Reservation Bill, India and its neighbours, caste and class politics in India and so on.
 
Mock Parliament
  • The Department also organizes Mock Parliament. This experience enables the students to understand the nuances of parliamentary proceedings.
 
Students Seminar Participation
 
  • The Department is a P.G. department hence a yearly seminar presentation of the students is a complusory activity. Many themes on Indian Politics and government are handled.
 
Student Projects
 
  • Student's Projects are encouraged to give the students a chance to conduct independent research. Student participation in projects is secured. Project writing is over and above the syllabi requirement. Student Publications in the In house Research Journal R’Search are also encouraged
 
Guest Lectures
Guest lectures are organized to give the students a broader perspective of the subject. Topics of contemporary relevance are selected. Here is just a sample list.

Conducts several visits for developing a broad orientation Visits to places of academic interest. Study tours are conducted often to break the monotony of class room teaching and to get practical experiences.

Visit to the Pune Municipal Corporation was arranged along with all the departments concerned with the working of the corporation. Recently the department also conducted a voter registration drive on the campus. Apart from the co curricular activities the Department also takes an interest in organizing several extra curricular activites for their students. Every Year a Youth Fest named POLITICUS is organized by the Department to give the students the freedom to express themselves in all forms be it Debate and Elocution, Literature, Sports, Fine Arts and even Performing Arts. An informal Alumni network  has been formed. This facilitates sponsorships for departmental activity and facilitates surveys and interviews.
