Department Of English

The Department of English was established in 1945.
The Department of English is presently headed by Professor Dr. Leena Chandorkar. The Department of English is one of the oldest departments and is the backbone of the college as every student has English as a compulsory subject at the entry level of graduation. As one of the important departments of the college, it has played a salient role in the academic ambience of the college. With the introduction of the NEP 2020 from the academic year 2023, the role of the department has increased manifold. It is offered as a major subject, leading to a four-year Honours course. The Honours course for undergraduates familiarizes them with the basic genres of literature and to the branches of language studies such as Linguistics, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis. There is also a paper on Literary Criticism. In addition to the Major paper, English is offered as an Optional subject for the Arts and Science students and has received an overwhelming response from all streams. The NEP 2020 offers greater scope for innovation and creativity for syllabus framing and the department faculty looks forward to designing more job-oriented courses in the forthcoming years. The Department has conducted several National Conferences in the past. The last one entitled as “New Horizons of Women’s Studies in 21st Century” was conducted in January 2020.

Our Department, apart from regular teaching process conducts several enriching activities which include:
  • lectures by Eminent Scholars
  • Dramatic readings and Presentations of texts
  • Poster Making
  • Model Making
  • Providing E books to students
  • Paper Presentations
  • Literary Fest
