The Department of English is presently headed by Professor Dr. Leena Chandorkar. The Department of English is one of the oldest departments and was established in 1945. It is an indispensable part of the curriculum as students have English as an Ability Enhancement Course at the entry level of graduation. With the introduction of the NEP 2020 from the academic year 2023, the role of the department has increased manifold. It is offered as a major subject, leading to a four-year Honours course. The Honours course for undergraduates familiarizes them with the basic genres of literature and to the branches of language studies such as Linguistics, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis. There is also a paper on Literary Criticism. In addition to the Major paper, English is offered as an Optional subject for the Arts and Science students and has received an overwhelming response from all streams. The NEP 2020 offers greater scope for innovation and creativity for syllabus framing and the department faculty looks forward to designing more job-oriented courses in the forthcoming years. The Department has conducted several National Conferences in the past.
Our Department, apart from regular teaching process conducts several enriching activities which include:
- Guest lectures by Eminent Scholars
- Dramatic readings and Presentations of texts
- Poster Making
- Model Making
- Providing E books to students
- Paper Presentations
- Literary Fest
- Virtual guided tour of Ibsen’s museum in Norway.
- Study tours outside Pune.
