The Department of Economics is active not only in teaching the syllabus prescribed by the University at the Under Graduate and Post Graduate level but also in developing the overall personality of the individual. For this the Department organizes several co-curriculum and extra curricular activities in which the students are encouraged to participate.
The Maharashtra Education Society's, Abasaheb Garware College has started the Department Economics at the Under Graduate level in 1960 & the Post Graduate level in 1970. Since 2003, the department has also started the Post Graduate Research Center in Economics, affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University.
The department has won the 'Best Department Award' in the college for 2007-08.
The Dept. is a University recognized Centre for Research in Economics. Presently there are 20 students registered for M.Phil. and 59 for Ph.D. and 15 guides are affiliated for M.Phil and Ph.D.

- Organized one day seminar on opportunities and avenues in Economics for the students in the preview of University of Pune. Ex-students of Economics, Dr.Kishore Kulkarni (Prof. of Economics, Denver University, America) was the Chief Guest for the seminar
- The Department of Economics has organized International, State and University Level Seminars with a view to update the students with current economic issues.
- International Conference was organized on "WTO and its impact on Developing Economy". Hon. Shri. Jayant Patil – Minister for Finance, Hon. Shri. Balasaheb Thorat-Minister for Agriculture, Maharashtra State were chief guests for the conference.
- The Department has also organized workshops on "Entrepreneurship development", "Research Methodology", "Marketing Skills" and "Cooperation" for the students. In the democratic country like India, student should be aware of their rights and responsibilities. Keeping this view a workshop on "Right to Information was organized by the department".
- The guest lecturers of eminent persons in economics have also been arranged on economical and social issues.
- Essay and debating competitions were organized to boost the study habits, to encourage stage daring and to enhance communication skills.
- To update the knowledge and to test knowledge of the students, quiz competition was organized for UG and PG students.
- Every year Department organizes "ARTHTSAV" program with the help of students. There are various competitions under ARTHTSAV like Economic Rangoli, Economics Crossword, Poster Exhibition, Debate and Elocution competitions, Essay writing, Cultural program, Sport events etc.
- Form last year Department organizes “UDYOJAKATA VIKAS” event to develop entrepreneurship skill of students.
- Live Budget and Discussion session on Union Budget of India.
- Students (PG, M.Phil & Ph.D) are participating to Departmental projects.

- Study tour to Hyderabad 2020, in the tour have visited following places i.e. Golconda Fort, Salar Jung Museum, Chowmahalla Palace, Birla Temple, Hossain Sagar Lake (Zoo), Charminar and Old Market.
